SNOW! – Cary, NC

Posted on January 30, 2010

I grew up in upstate New York where winter lasts approximately six months (slight exaggeration) and a foot of snow wouldn’t cancel school.  As a kid I loved the snow – my brothers and I used to build massive forts using our recycling bin to make bricks (yes, we had THAT much snow to do so!).  And sledding in Highland Park in Rochester, NY was the the place to go because of it’s insanely long hill.  But as I’ve grown older, I’ve become less fond of the pretty white stuff.  Cleaning off the car, shoveling the driveway, and battling slow and slushy traffic to work are now my associations with snow.  That is, until I had kids.  There is nothing more exciting than experiencing life through your child’s eyes!  When my son woke up this morning, he called me into his room to look out his window to see all the snow!  He excitedly asked to “go outside to play in the snow, mama!” at 7:30 this morning.  And after breakfast, that’s what we did!

Jump!! – Raleigh, NC Family Photographer

Posted on January 16, 2010

I was so honored to have the opportunity to photograph the Allen family last weekend.  I’ve known Gary for some time now and after speaking to Susan several times, I couldn’t wait to meet her and the rest of their family in person.  We had casually discussed taking family pictures last fall, but due to conflicting schedules and the birth of my daughter in November, it didn’t quite work out.  Right after the new year, Susan called me to see if I could squeeze them in fairly quickly for a family session because she was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer and was starting chemo.  We scheduled their session for that following weekend and lucked out with a beautiful weekend.  I’m in awe of her spirit as she embraces this fight – she is upbeat and strong and I know she will beat it!

We met up at the J. C. Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh last weekend and we couldn’t have asked for better weather.  After an unseasonably cold few weeks, it was nice to get outside and enjoy a beautiful 60 degree day in NC.

I have to say, some of my favorite pics from this session are the jumping pics.  The kids had a blast taking “action” shots!  It really felt like we were having a “big air” competition!!

Dad’s favorite word of the day: “cheese!!!”

One of my favorites from the day!
